Lemmings are cute, but they’re also stupid. They will jump off a cliff if you order them to. People who establish blogs because everyone else is doing it, for example. Guess what happens after a short period of time? The blogs are dying.

I erased innumerable sites from a list of many Web sites, most of which are blogs because the sites and blogs no longer existed. People either ran out of steam or didn’t see the point in starting them in the first place.

How can you decide if a blog is appropriate for your company? Discover why people start blogs, how they locate their niche, and how blogging technologies may be applied to more than just blogs.

The content on your blog is king.

Some people prefer to read blogs, while others prefer to read newsletters, while yet others prefer to rely on feeds, and still, others read a combination of the three. Whatever method is used to disseminate information, each medium has one thing in common: content. A blog connects your newsletter and your business to all of these people while also delivering crucial content in a unique approach.

Since June of 2000, I’ve started blogging. If you look at Meryl’s remarks, you’ll find that my early blog articles are more personal. When blogs originally became popular in the late 1990s, they were primarily used as personal diaries and journals. My blog, like the blogosphere, has evolved from personal to business talk, while I still include personal notes here and there.

A few bloggers are known for talking about their jobs, goods, and personal lives. That may work for celebrities with adoring admirers who want to know everything about them, but not for the typical businessperson. Other business people are looking for advice on how to succeed, and if a blog spends too much time hawking things and providing useless information, few people will return. People who supply useful knowledge are the ones whose items sell well. Readers already know what kind of information they’re getting, so they expect the same or better quality when they buy something. Their blog should reflect this value. It’s similar to when someone signs up for a newsletter after viewing an example.

Who wants to go somewhere they haven’t blogged before?

The last thing anyone wants to be is a lemming (I would hope). What factors do you consider while deciding whether or not to start a blog? What you didn’t expect is that the solution isn’t black and white. Consider the following inquiries:

Can you keep it up to date at least five times every week?

Do you have anything to say that isn’t just a link to anything else?

Do you follow any other blogs or RSS feeds?

Are you able to deliver information that is useful to others as well as yourself?

How many people have signed up for your newsletter?

On a typical day, week, or month, how many unique visitors do you receive?

The most important factor is whether or not you can update your blog on a regular basis. The authors of popular blogs publish numerous times every day. Although useful, just connecting to other websites does not provide visitors with a compelling reason to visit yours. Reading other blogs or RSS feeds is an excellent approach to learn how to lead a conversation. Look for other blogs that cover comparable issues to yours and read them. Do you disagree with their viewpoints? Write about it and explain why you feel that way. It’s normal to have cross-blog discussions, which is where trackback comes in handy.

Trackback is a feature of blogs. If you opt to remark on another blog post in your blog rather than in the comments section of that blog, you use the trackback link to link to the dialogue. Trackback is comparable to the permalink, which is the permanent URL for a blog item, but it has a distinct URL that you may copy and paste into your trackback box on your site.

Aside from the technical requirements of running a blog on a daily basis, the size of your subscriber list and the amount of traffic to your website are solid predictors of the kind of response you’ll get when you start a blog. Starting from the ground up with minimal traffic means you’ve got a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of you. There is no $97 magic recipe that can turn your blog into an overnight success. Your blog, however, can engage a large number of prospects and clients with a little patience and inventiveness.

Choose a speciality.

Because there are so many blogs out there, choosing a specialized topic when establishing a blog can give you a higher chance of attracting and keeping readers. Meryl’s notes are divided into three categories: web-related, geeky, and wordy. This is excessive in actuality. I need to develop three distinct blog entry points for my viewers, so those interested in writing, newsletters, and Internet marketing only get the wordy postings. Those interested in site design will receive web-related articles, while technophiles will receive geeky content.

In addition to Meryl’s notes, I maintain my own blog. It’s about deafness and cochlear implants. Although this could be considered geeky, it is a personal blog and does not belong in Meryl’s notes. This blog is aimed at a different demographic.

Both of my blogs’ blogging tools provide syndication capabilities, allowing users who use feed readers or aggregators to consume the content through the program. What Is This RSS, XML, RDF, and Atom Business? provides an explanation of syndication and feed readers. When sending out a new issue of a newsletter, leave a remark or a link to it on the blog, so that the blog and feed readers get the goodies as well.

The same tools are used by blogs that are disguised as blogs.

Blogging tools are useful for more than just blogging. Such tools are a great method to make it easier for you to update your website more frequently than you would otherwise. It’s how I keep track of my list of tableless websites. Using blogging tools is a lot easier than manually editing HTML files, which is how I used to do it. It isn’t a blog, despite the fact that it is created with a blog tool. The blogging tool has been transformed into a content management system in this scenario (CMS).

The elaborate and expensive CMSes out there aren’t necessary for small business owners. They find it easier to administer their website with blogging software or engage someone to customize the tool for them.

Blogs have found a home in the business world, and individuals are coming up with new and inventive ways to use them. Some firms use an intranet blog to communicate project status, risks, and analytics. They’re utilized to keep track of knowledge. With so much information coming in, blog tools are a great way to share, organize, and process it.

Being a follower can be beneficial or detrimental. Everyone wants to succeed, but no one wants to walk off a cliff with the lemmings. Best practices will not help because the decision to blog is dependent on the organization’s mission, needs, and goals, as well as the desires and demands of its target market. A blog dedicated to lemmings? There is one, in a way. Or perhaps you’d like to establish your own and discuss bad business decisions.
